Chloé is a tenacious little wild cat. At only twice the size of a house cat, she has the strength, agility, and determination of a tiger.
She sports the most beautiful fur coat, golden with black spots and stripes all over. Her eyes are golden too and useful—she can see better in the dark than we can see in the day. That's because she does most of her eating at night.
She has a bizarre palate. Her favorite foods are armadillos, opossums, monkeys and tortoises. Just think about having to eat that next time your parents give you vegetables.
Chloé's not afraid of anything. Most cats hate water but ocelots are excellent swimmers. They're also great climbers, so when she's not diving for fish, she's usually lounging in the trees.
She's a fiercely independent cat but for all of her skills, she's not particularly adaptable. This makes changes in her habitat difficult for her to handle. Ocelots live in Mexico, Central America and South America but also used to be found in the US, in places like Texas, where they are now almost completely extinct.
Ocelots like Chloé have been stolen from their homes, hunted for their fur and sold as exotic pets. They have been driven into smaller and smaller areas. And now, highways run through what is left of their territory in the US. Let's give ocelots the range they need to roam and they freedom they have earned.
